A high school teacher in central Pennsylvania has been arrested following allegations that she had a sexual relationship with a male student.
NBC affiliate WJAX6 reports Nikki Varney, 44, has been charged with institutional sexual assault, statutory sexual assault, corruption of minors and unlawful contact with minors. She taught science for the last seven years at Williamsburg High School, but has been placed on administrative leave following the incident.
According to police, their investigation began after being alerted by the school. They later determined that Varney “had in fact had sexual intercourse with a male student over the summer,” as quoted in the Altoona Mirror.
Earlier this year, Varney ran for a seat on the Hollidaysburg Area School Board. In a statement posted by the Altoona Mirror at the time, Varney said, “Being a parent, teacher, and taxpayer gives me a unique perspective into all three stakeholders school directors affect. I have children in the school system so I understand the importance that children receive the educational foundation they need to flourish and to become contributing members of society.”
Today marks the first day of classes at Williamsburg High School. According to a page on the school district's website which has been taken down, Varney taught science, chemistry and physics.
She is currently being arraigned in Blair County, Pennsylvania.
