An 82-year-old woman in Arizona survived a horrendous attack by cleverly playing dead. According to 11 Alive, the woman was assaulted in her home in Gila County, Arizona when a man in a ski mask attacked her from behind. Her grandchildren shared details on Facebook from the brutal incident.
The woman was making preparations for her husband's funeral the next day. Her grandson, Jesse Leetham, says the suspect broke into the home around 3:00 a.m. on Friday after all of the family members had left. The man (described as stocky and 5'8" to 5'10") bashed the woman on the head with a glass and beat her with his fist.
The woman, lying in a pool of her own blood, played dead until the man left. She called 911 hours later and was taken to the hospital. Because of this, she missed her husband's funeral.
"Our family was heartbroken before with the loss of one of the most amazing men to ever walk this earth, but this, this has just devastated us," her grandaughter shared on Facebook. "If this monster of a person has the stomach to do this to a helpless woman in her 80's, my fear is that he will have no problem doing this again."
Authorities are asking the public for any information about the assault to come forward. The family says, "the last thing my sweet Nana would want is anyone to make a fuss over her." The family is offering a reward for information that leads to an arrest.
