The municipal office building in Augusta, Maine had to be sprayed for bedbugs after a man threw a cup of the bugs onto an office counter on Friday. According to the Associated Press, after he threw the cup about 100 bedbugs scattered away.
According to Central Maine, the City Center, which houses the city’s municipal offices, closed shortly after the incident. The same day, a pest control contractor came in to spray.
City Manager William Bridgeo said the man complained Friday to the code enforcement office about bedbugs at his former apartment and then left. However, he returned after he showed the cup of bugs to a manager at his new apartment after being told he couldn’t live there. The man then went to the General Assistance Office where he asked for a form to request assistance. He was told he didn’t qualify, according to the AP.
“He whipped out a cup (full of live bedbugs) and slammed it on the counter, and bam, off they flew, maybe 100 of them,” Bridgeo said in the Central Maine report.
Police didn’t immediately release the man’s name. They are unsure if charges will be filed.
Bridgeo said he’s “never had anything as yucky as this” happen before.
