A store in North Carolina is being threatened with a boycott after cell phone video of the owner attacking a suspected shoplifter was released. The owner of the beauty supply store is an Asian man named Sung Ho Lim. In the video he can be seen confronting a young black woman. She insists that she doesn’t have anything and offers to show him her bag, but when she attempts to exit he pushes her. Lim then follows the woman, attempts to kick her and then wrestles her to the ground into a chokehold.
The video is very disturbing, and the community is outraged by Lim’s treatment towards the woman. WBTV reports that people have been showing up to protest outside the store, Missha Beauty Salon. Their reporters showed Lim the video and he confirmed that it’s him, but says he hasn’t yet given police the CCTV video that shows the woman allegedly stealing an item from a shelf.
Police told WBTV that the woman refused to show Lim the inside of her bag, though in the cell phone footage she appears to ask him to check so she can exit the store.
One protester, Teresa Mosely, told WBTV that they were very upset with the way Lim restrained the woman, especially with his arm across her neck. ‘When he was choking her, he was almost choking her to death. She was gasping for breath, and he was continually choking her,” she said.
Lim told WBTV that he plans to apologize to the woman on Monday, though there’s no clarity on if he has retracted the shoplifting accusation.
