Chyna Doll Dupree AKA Chyna Gibson, a beloved and nationally renowned drag performer from New Orleans, was shot and killed outside of a shopping center.
According to Nola.com, police say Dupree was shot several times on the 4300 block of Downman Road at about 8:30 p.m. People nearby heard eight to 10 shots ring out; no suspects are currently known, nor is a motivation. Dupree was living in California but had returned to her hometown to celebrate Mardi Gras.
Dupree was described as "a very loving person," by an unnamed woman who claimed to be related to her. "She didn't do nothing to nobody."
"She was just a really good person," a friend said to a local news station. "Everyone loved her. This is unnecessary."
Loved ones continue to mourn the transgender artist by sharing videos of her performances on Facebook and YouTube: "My heart breaks as this community must find a way to honor you in death and begin to move forward," one person wrote. "The stage will never be the same!"
Mic notes that Dupree is the fifth transgender woman murdered in the year 2017. She was the third trans woman killed this month.
