CNN Identified The Redditor Who Created Trump's Infamous Twitter GIF

But did CNN threaten the Redditor into silence?

By Eric Shorey

Donald Trump's penchant for rampant and often controversial social media usage peaked this weekend. Amidst attacks on MSNBC reporters Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski and threats against North Korea, the President tweeted a looping video of himself physically attacking a man labeled as CNN. Now, CNN has identified the Reddit user who created the GIF, furthering the controversy around the tweet.

CNN seemed to broker a deal with the Reddit user who apologized for creating the video. They promised not to reveal his identity if he ceased his operations, which to many resembled a threat.

According to Deadline, user HanA**holeSolo feared for his safety following the video's massive exposure after the President's tweet. His apology was plainly disingenuous considering he had posted the following to Reddit shortly after the President's tweet: “Holy s—!! I wake up and have my morning coffee and who retweets my s—post but the MAGA EMPORER himself!!! I am honored!!”

“I love people of all races, creeds and origins. One of my best friends is a homosexual and one of my best friends is Jewish and one of my best friends is Muslim," the Reddit user said to CNN, contradicting handfuls of openly xenophobic (and since-deleted) posts he had made on the popular forum.

HAS also posted (and then later deleted) an apology to Reddit: “First of all, I would like to apologize to the members of the reddit community for getting this site and this sub embroiled in a controversy that should never have happened,” he wrote. “I would also like to apologize for the posts made that were racist, bigoted, and anti-semitic. I am in no way this kind of person, I love and accept people of all walks of life and have done so for my entire life. I am not the person that the media portrays me to be in real life, I was trolling and posting things to get a reaction from the subs on reddit and never meant any of the hateful things I said in those posts. I would never support any kind of violence or actions against others simply for what they believe in, their religion, or the lifestyle they choose to have. Nor would I carry out any violence against anyone based upon that or support anyone who did ... It was a prank, nothing more ... What the President’s feed showed was not the original post that was posted here, but loaded up somewhere else and sound added to it then sent out on Twitter.”

It is unclear if Reddit users plan on retaliating against CNN in any way in the future. Either way, Trump plans on continuing to use Twitter:
