Matthew Patrick McGee, likely under the influence of drugs or alcohol, was arrested after attacking a 67-year-old woman while she slept in her home in Montauk. He was found sleeping in her bed after the attack.
According to the New York Daily News, McGee had gone through an unlocked rear door of the woman's home. He beat and choked the victim extensively before she escaped and alerted her husband who was sleeping in a nearby room. McGee then allegedly locked himself inside the bedroom while police were called, East Hampton Star reports. The victim was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for her injuries and released.
McGee was arraigned Monday on charges including assault, burglary and resisting arrest. He has no prior criminal record.
"He's still trying to figure everything out," said McGee's attorney Attorney Brian DeSesa, who asserts that McGee does not remember what happened that night.
Coast Guard officials have noted that McGee was assigned to the nearby Montauk station and are currently cooperating with the investigation.
