Floridian Ashley Smart is being charged with aggravated manslaughter following the death of his 2-year-old son. Reports from New 4 Jax suggest that Smart was high on heroin at the time of the child's death. Smart now also faces charges of possession of heroin and marijuana.

Aiden Smart, Ashley's son, was found in the family's swimming pool and was rushed to the hospital where he died. Police investigations turned up 0.07 grams of heroin and 2.5 grams of marijuana along with five full bags and two empty bags of heroin, three needles, a tourniquet and a spoon. The arrest indicates that Ashley is likely guilty of "culpable negligence." It is unclear if Aiden's mother was also home at the time of the incident.

“It is so heartbreaking, because again I always saw that little boy whenever I drove by coming home,” said a neighbor who asked to only be identified by the name Anna. “I would see him most of the time playing in the yard running around.”

"It's just sickening to me," Ashley Schneider, another neighbor, said.

The Department of Families and Children released the following statement on the situation: "We are deeply saddened to learn about this child’s death. The department has initiated a child death investigation and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement. Additionally, we are providing services to help the family during this difficult time.
The Department of Children and Families had no previous contact with the deceased child."

Smart family members did not give a comment on the story. Ashley is currently being held on $277,000 bond.
