Phillip Gleason, of South Carolina, admitted to beating 5-year-old Soren Chilson for weeks before finally landing a deadly blow that crushed her skull, police said. He was sentenced to 38 years in prison for the crime on Monday after pleading guilty.
April Victoria “Vickie” Gleason, his wife and then-girlfriend, was sentenced to 18 years in prison on charges that she knew about the abuse and tried to cover it up.
Phillip initially told police that Soren had had a seizure and was coughing up blood the night of her death, but emergency responders noticed that she was covered in bruises. She ultimately died of bleeding to her brain.
Text messages between the couple showed that they regularly joked about the abuse, with Vickie threatening to commit “Soren-cide” and Phillip sending his then-girlfriend photos and videos of her injured child screaming with the caption “She will suffer my rules.”
Vickie even bought cream to cover up Soren’s bruises, the Charlotte Observer reported.
