Texas father Joel Ortiz Rodriguez Jr. was charged with child abuse on Thursday after doctors last year allegedly found that his 2-month-old daughter was malnourished and had 25 broken bones.
Rodriguez admitted to pulling on his daughter’s arms when he got angry, and held her so tightly he heard her “bones pop,” People magazine reported.
At one point he was so frustrated about her crying, he allegedly told police, that he pushed her away from him with his full body weight.
“Yeah, I did push down on her, but I never intentionally tried to hurt her,” Rodriguez told a local news station. “I didn’t think I was going to do all that stuff, but that’s what they charged me with.”
The baby’s mother told police that she “noticed a crunching sound in her daughter’s ribs” but thought it was just “her daughter growing.” No charges for the mother have been reported at this time.
Doctors last October had first contacted police after finding that the girl had extensive bruising, a cut under her tongue, and broken bones in her pelvis, ribs, arms, and legs. She also had elevated enzymes, which doctors said was an indication of trauma to her internal organs.
The daughter was quickly taken from her father’s home and placed in foster care. Rodriguez has been able to visit her one day a week.
Oxygen reached out to Austin Police and is awaiting a response.
