A father took his own life moments after finding his son had accidentally shot himself.
The child apparently found the loaded gun by accident in the family's South Carolina home. Authorities arrived on the scene after the mother called 911. They tried to get the father to drop his weapon but he eventually shot himself with a self-inflicted gunshot.
Emergency medical services transported both of them to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead.
As Fox 57 shares, Coroner Gary Watts autopsy results show that both father and son died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
"Our hearts are heavy at the tremendous loss of life," shared Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook in a statement. "We have victim advocates assigned to the case to assist the family during this difficult time. This experience has also been emotionally trying for responding officers. They will participate in a debriefing to discuss the incident and receive further support as needed."
A GoFundMe page has been created to support the family that lost the father and son.
As part of the ongoing investigation, authorities are working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to determine the gun’s origin and its owner.
