The ancient Greek playwright Sophocles once said, “Sons are the anchors of a mother's life.” That surely was the case for one elderly Brooklyn mom, who loved her son so much she couldn't bear to part with him, even after he died in middle age. The woman, who has yet to be named, kept the corpse of her dead son hidden away in her home for up to 8 years without telling anyone. A relative unearthed the grim keepsake after the woman had to be hospitalized following a fall.
The dead son made his living as a livery car driver and was last seen in 2008, when he was in a car accident. Some family members say they hadn’t seen him in at least 20 years. The woman was known among her neighbors as an eccentric recluse, who talked to no one as she walked the streets of Midwood, a middle class Jewish enclave deep in the borough. The cause and year of death has yet to be determined, and the mother has yet to explain why she never reported her son’s death. He would have been 51.
