It’s often said that those who turn to a life of crime lack the intelligence to make it in the straight world. Whether or not that’s true, it’s certainly the case for one dirty cop who forgot to turn off his body-came before breaking the laws he was sworn to protect. Sergeant Roshern C. McKinney, 33, of the Grants, New Mexico Police Department was arrested last week following a month-long investigation, begun after his lapel camera filmed him stealing confiscated marijuana from the police station and driving to his girlfriend’s house to give it to her father.
State Police said McKinney later stole nearly $800 in cash and an 8-ounce brick of marijuana from the evidence vault. The marijuana has an estimated street value of over $3,000. He has been charged with marijuana distribution, conspiracy and felony embezzlement while his girlfriend, 23-year-old Tanicka Gallegos-Gonzales, was charged with drug distribution and conspiracy. McKinney was released on Saturday and is on paid leave pending further investigation.
