A retired New York City corrections officer allegedly shot his wife on Sunday evening after she filed for divorce, The New York Daily News reported.

The man then fled the scene after shooting his wife at about 8 pm, police said.

Police have not released the name of the suspect or the victim, who was seriously injured from being shot in the chest but is currently in stable condition, reported the Daily News. She’s expected to survive.

Police found the 55-year-old man walking on a nearby street and arrested him on the spot, also confiscating a gun in his possession.

The married couple’s landlord told the Daily News that there was no history of violence between the pair.

“I didn’t hear the gunshot or anything, but I saw the lady, the wife. The wife got hurt,” he added.

The landlord said that the wife was conscious as an ambulance took her away from the scene.

"They were nice people," a neighbor of the couple told The New York Post. "It’s scary, this neighborhood is very nice.”
