The search for Steve Stephens, who recorded himself killing a man on Easter Sunday then uploaded the footage to Facebook, continues into Tuesday. Authorities say that he has not been seen since the attack, according to CNN, and their search is now considered nationwide - though there’s no clear sign he’s left Ohio.
The suspect’s mother told reporters that she last saw Stephens on Saturday, at which time he told her that it “would be a miracle” if she ever saw him again. He told her the following day he was shooting people because he was mad at his girlfriend. Stephens allegedly demanded his mother and girlfriend call him in a Facebook post that featured the murder of 74-year-old Robert Godwin.
CBS News contacted the woman identified as Stephens’ girlfriend. She replied with a text statement that reads:
“We had been in a relationship for several years. I am sorry that all of this has happened. My heart & prayers goes out to the family members of the victim(s). Steve really is a nice guy... he is generous with everyone he knows. He was kind and loving to me and my children. This is a very difficult time for me and my family. Please respect our privacy at this time.”
No further information on their relationship has been released.
