After marrying her American host, a foreign exchange student and her new husband allegedly lured her 14-year-old sister to Miami and sexually abused her her over a period of years, The Miami Herald reported.
Dale Leary, 50, had been previously convicted of breaking into a home and sexually assaulting a woman at gunpoint when in 2012 he became a foreign exchange host to teenage student Marta San Jose, of Spain, who was 16 at the time, police said.
Leary seduced San Jose when she was 18 and married her shortly after, divorcing his wife to do so, police claimed. Soon after, Leary and San Jose convinced her younger sister to move from Spain and join them in Miami.
In Miami, the couple attempted to convince the 14-year-old girl that she had been sexually abused by her parents, which hadn’t happened, the younger sister told police.
The couple would have sex in front of the girl and asked her to join in, saying that it would help her deal with the trauma of this fictional sexual abuse, she claimed. She took part in their sex acts at least seven times, she said.
Another time, she claimed to police, the couple got her drunk and then took nude photos of her wearing high heels.
San Jose is now 21, and her sister is 16.
Leary and San Jose have both pleaded not guilty to charges including lewd and lascivious conduct with a child under 16, possession of child pornography, engaging in a sexual act with a familial child and contributing to the delinquency of a child.
High school exchange programs are run by private companies, but they have to receive accreditation by the U.S. State Department, which requires that hosts provide their exchange student guests with safe housing. It’s unclear if the program performed a background check on Leary before approving him as a host; his prior conviction is publicly available.
