A retired teacher from Oregon City, Oregon was found guilty Friday for groping multiple seventh grade girls — all on the same day. Norman Scott, 66, was working as a substitute gym teacher in October 2015 when he inappropriately touched several girls over the course of four coed gym classes he subbed, according to The Oregonian. Most of the girls were just 12 years old.
Over the course of the two-week trial, victims gave testimony that Scott touched their breasts, thighs, and other parts of their bodies. Clackamas County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Jones called the girls' testimony compelling and credible.
"The possibility of accidental touchings is just not reasonable," Jones said, according to The Oregonian. "There are too many incidents for there to be one accident after another, after another."
The ex-teacher’s defense attorney Jacob Houze claimed that Scott was “falsely accused.” He pointed at inconsistencies and contradictions in the students' statements and said the students were "just wrong" in their recollection of events.
"We have each accuser's individual allegations, which are rife with contradiction, dramatic inconsistencies and none of them enjoy a shred of corroboration," the attorney argued.
This wasn’t the first time Scott was in hot water over his conduct with students. In 2015, he filed a $10,000 lawsuit against Portland Public Schools, according to People. In that incident, Scott claimed he was “wrongly complained” about to the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission over a text message he sent to a student. The school district dropped that complaint the same year, and a dismissal of Scott’s lawsuit soon followed.
In 2009, Scott taught a sex education class while wearing a pair of underwear over his pants with a hole in the middle. On his head, he sported a condom hat. That bizarre incident was recorded and posted to YouTube, and Scott was disciplined for his odd teaching method.
On Friday, Scott was convicted on four counts of third-degree sexual abuse and four counts of harassment, People reports. Scott is free for now but will be sentenced in November. Judge Jones has barred him from contact with children, with the exception of his own grandchild.
