A former high school football coach in Tennessee is standing by his wife in court for sleeping with one of his teen players.
According to People, 27-year-old Kelsey McCarter pled guilty on Monday to six counts of statutory rape and one count of exploitation of a minor for having sex with a 16-year-old player. Justin McCarter, her husband, is a former South-Doyle High School football team in Knoxville.
Her attorney maintains that the incident has not affected her husband and he forgives her. “She made a mistake,” McCarter’s attorney, Doug Trant, said after the hearing, per the Knoxville News-Sentinel. “She’ll move past it. She’s young and, as you saw, her family is here in support of her. Her husband is strongly supportive of her.”
She received a three-year sentence.
The lawyer adds that his client is sorry for what happened. “She’s very sorry about what happened, she’s sorry she put her family through this,” said Trant, per the News-Sentinel. “It’s tough and it will continue to be tough.”
According to the allegations, the wife had sex several times with the victim between February and December 2015. Kelsey additionally sent the teen a topless video of herself. The victim and his brother were living with the family so that the husband could serve as a mentor.
The husband stepped down from his post at the school in February.
The incident had larger ramifications on the school itself. Both Principal Tim Berry and assistant principal Clark Duncan (pictured below; Berry left and Duncan right) were placed on administrative leave briefly in February due to allegations that they did not immediately report the sexual allegations. The husband was also investigated for his involvement. Criminal charges are not being pursued against the three men. However, the status of Berry and Duncan, who also serves as head football coach, at the school is currently under review.
