A woman in India cut the penis off a man she said had been sexually assaulting her for years—and officials applauded her for the castration, arresting the man she mutilated, reported The New York Daily News.
The woman’s family hired Gangeshananda Theerthapada, a Hindu mystic, in the hopes that he would be able to cure her ailing father. But the woman claimed that Theerthapada, 54, was in fact a con artist who repeatedly raped her, including when the woman, currently 23, was underage.
When he allegedly tried to assault her on Friday, the woman responded by attacking him with a knife, chopping off a section of his penis, police said. She then fled her home and called police.
“It’s a courageous and strong act by the woman,” said Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of the woman’s home state.
Surgeons said the alleged attacker’s penis has not fully been restored.
“It was difficult to stitch the cut off portion,” a medical official said in a statement. “The surgery was done to stop bleeding and to restore the urinary tract.”
Theerthapada was charged with rape and offenses related to the sexual abuse of children.
