A prisoner killed his cellmate by ramming him repeatedly in the head with a cinder block until he was completely convinced he was dead, USA Today reported.
Casey Pigge, 29, of Ohio, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder for the gruesome killing from last year, in which Pigge said he kept striking his cellmate, 26-year-old Luther Wade, because “he would not die.”
In the killing, Pigge first blindfolded Wade, pretending he was about to show him a card trick, prosecutors said. He then took a brick from the wall of his cell and began bashing Wade’s head.
“[He] would not die so I picked up the brick and hit him again, hit him again,” he told investigators. “He wouldn't die.”
Corrections officers found the pair 10 minutes later. Wade was transported to the hospital, where he died. In the end, Wade—who was in prison on burglary charges—was only Pigge’s cellmate for one day.
Pigge was in prison serving a sentence for aggravated murder in 2009.
“Because of his prior conviction for aggravated murder, our office would typically have sought the death penalty under these circumstances," Prosecutor David Fornshell said a statement about the death. "However, despite his ability to premeditate and carry out this brutal murder, the Supreme Court has held that someone with the defendant’s IQ is ineligible for the death penalty.”
Pigge will be sentenced in February.
