In 2001, a 31-year-old Memphis woman was was attacked while walking down the street, stabbed with a metal object up under her chin and then sexually assaulted. According to Memphis’s Fox 40, the rapist left his dentures at the scene of the crime. They were bagged, along with other evidence, and put in a Memphis Police Department property room. There, they remained untouched for more than a decade, according to The Washington Post.

Last summer, rape kits were retested and a match was identified. The name of a murderer was actually chiselled onto the dentures. According to the Commercial Appeal, Thomas Maupin, 67, could have been easily identified by an examination of the teeth. The dentures were made while Maupin was serving a prison sentence for the 1988 murder of a 6-year-old girl in another state, according to Fox40.

It costs $1,000 to $1,500 to test a rape kit, which often leads to a backlog.
