A California man has been sentenced to prison for a "sextortion" scheme that targeted two teen girls he met on the app Kik.
Josh Manuel Magana, 27, was sentenced to 31 years in prison for rape and other sex crimes on Wednesday.
Magana had contacted a 16-year-old girl on Kik, using the screen name "thegiftedmonster," in October 2016, the Los Angeles Times reports.
"He just sort of appeared out of nowhere. She didn't know him and he's messaging her on Kik, basically saying if you don't send me nude photos I'm going to kill you, I'm going to kill your family," Deputy District Attorney Michael DeRose told KTLA. Magana told the victim he knew where she lived and where she went to school.
The victim told her parents and police about the incident, which led to Magana’s arrest earlier this year. Using a search warrant, detectives found images and videos of another teen, aged 17. He threatened her in the same manner as the first victim over Kik. But, it was even worse. Magana had threatened to distribute the naked photos over the internet unless she met up to have sex with him. Police said that out of fear, the teen went to Magana’s home where she was sexually assaulted. He repeatedly threatened and extorted her for sex over a period of time.
Anyone else who was contacted by Magana is urged to call the Los Angeles Regional Human Trafficking Task Force at (323) 526-5156
