A Michigan man has pled guilty for killing his girlfriend's 4-month-old daughter.
According to MLive, 46-year-old Richard P. Watson pled guilty on Tuesday to second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse. In exchange for this plea, felony murder charges against him were dropped.
Evelyn Patricia Legacy was 4 months old when she died on August 14, 2015 at C.S. Motts Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Watson told authorities that he caused the injures because she was crying. "When he went in to check on her, she was fussy and crying, and while trying to quiet her, he said he snapped and began shaking the baby in the crib," shared Midland Police Detective Ryan Duynslager in the affidavit. "He said he did this for about one minute, at which time the baby became quiet."
Later that morning, Watson and the mother had trouble waking the child. They took Evelyn to IKEA and found her unresponsive. Emergency responders said she suffered from respiratory and cardiac arrest.
Her autopsy showed that she died of "massive internal brain injury." She also had previous fractures of at least three ribs and doctors found the baby's injuries were consistent with abuse.
Watson is to be sentenced on October 12, per court records.
The charges he pled to carry punishments up to life in prison.
