As the old saying goes, "Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face," or in the case of one Wisconsin man, "Don’t cut off your fingers to spite your ex."
ABC affiliate WAOW reports 21-year-old Damon Laru cut off three of his fingertips in an attempt to frame a man he had a relationship with after breaking into his home, and just hours before the incident, Laru shared an eerily ironic post on Facebook about his ex-boyfriend.
According to court records obtained by the Marshfield News-Herald, Laru kicked down the door of his ex-boyfriend’s home in the town of Marshfield on the night of September 9. Laru confronted the man about their relationship ending and wanted to discuss it with him. When the man asked him to leave, Laru went on a violent rampage.
First, Laru stormed into the man’s bedroom and attempted to light the sheets of his bed on fire with a lighter. The victim was able to pull Laru away from the bed, at which point Laru attacked the man and threw objects at him, several of which hit him.
Laru then got a knife and tried to stab the victim, who was cut on the arm as he tried to wrestle the weapon away. During the struggle, Laru bit the man's index finger, piercing the skin. He then somehow obtained a hammer which he wildly swung at the man, saying he would kill him. At this point the victim fled the home and called 911.
While the man waited outside for police to arrive and talked on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, Laru trashed his home. Laru threw around furniture and objects, broke things and splattered the man’s belongings with detergent, degreaser and other household cleaning products. He then grabbed a steak knife from the kitchen and cut the tips off three of his fingers, with the stated intention of blaming it on his ex-boyfriend.
After arriving on the scene, police brought both men to a nearby hospital where they were treated for the wounds. Police arrested Laru there, and he later admitted that he had caused the injuries to himself.
As of Tuesday, Laru was being held at the Wood County Jail pending a $30,000 cash bond. Though charges were not yet filed, it is expected he will be charged with battery, criminal damage to property, recklessly endangering safety and burglary, all as part of a domestic abuse incident.
Ironically, earlier on the evening, Laru had posted a meme on his Facebook page saying, “Name one thing your EX was good at.” He responded, “Calming my crazy self down.”
He later commented on his own post, saying, "I guess I was trying to stay positive lmao."
