No one knows what set off 31-year-old Dennis Gateley of Pittsburgh, PA, but his over the top temper tantrum nearly cost the life of a 6-week-old child and led to a SWAT team stand off. Authorities say Gateley got into an argument with the child’s mother which turned violent. After things turned physical, including Gateley being bitten by the family dog, he took the newborn into the bathroom and shoved its head in the toilet in an attempt to drown it. The mother and child somehow escaped but not before Gateley threw the baby’s crib down the stairs at them and threatened to kill them.
Dennis Gateley then went into his bedroom where he kept a stash of firearms. The local SWAT team was called which led to a standoff situation until being peacefully resolved by negotiators around 3 in the morning. The mother and her infant were taken to an area hospital and it is not yet known what injuries the child may have incurred. Gateley was defiant, even after being taken into custody, telling officers “I could have picked either one of you off at any time. I had the advantage, because I had the high ground.”
