Manhunt Underway For Shackled Prisoner Who Escaped Hospital

“You have to wonder, was anyone paying attention at all?"

Just yesterday, a prisoner named Daniel Ortiz managed to slip past security at Lenox Health Hospital with shackles still attached to his leg. Now, police are searching for Ortiz, who is still on the run despite injuries.

No one was injured during the escape, but police are now on the hunt for a man described by The Daily Mail as "5'6" tall, 130 pounds, with brown eyes, brown curly hair and a light complexion ... He was last seen wearing a dark colored pea coat, dark blue jeans, chocolate boots, and no shirt ... He is also walking with a noticeable limp and could be bleeding from the wrist."

Ortiz was believed to have escaped at around 3:30pm on Thursday, December 29th. According to CBS, Ortiz had been arrested for allegedly stealing from Macy's in Herald Square. He was taken to the hospital to see a doctor for undisclosed reasons.

Dogs have been tracking Ortiz's scent. From the hospital, Ortiz could have gotten on the train and gone in any number of directions. The hospital's close proximity to a number of subways have law enforcement officials searching a variety of neighborhoods.

“At first I was pretty nervous until I realized it was just petty larceny,” hospital employee Alex DiFiore said.

“You have to wonder, was anyone paying attention at all? Because you know if he was escorted here by policemen, it’s kind of nuts that he would just be able to flee from the hospital room,” resident Emma Fuchsberg added.

It doesn't seem like he is considered particularly dangerous.
