An Austin, Texas woman is accused of lighting a bed on fire near her sleeping infant in her apartment after an argument about juice last week. Andrea Garcia Flores, 22, has been charged with felony child endangerment and criminal negligence.
According to KHOU, Flores’ boyfriend said she came into the bedroom around 4:30 a.m. complaining that somebody drank her juice in the fridge. The boyfriend said he tried to ignore her, but Flores allegedly ripped the covers off the bed and threatened to light the bed on fire if he did not get up.
A police affidavit stated the boyfriend called her bluff. Then, he watched Flores grab a lighter and light the corner of the bed on fire. Police stated in the affidavit that their 7-month-old child was sleeping in a crib approximately one foot away from the bed. According to KHOU, Flores put out the fire and then got into a verbal argument with her boyfriend. It woke up their roommate and baby.
Police said the burn mark on the bed was “approximately 3 feet away” from where the infant was sleeping. Deputies said the burn was 8-to-10-inches long on the bed and the room still smelled when they arrived, according to KXAN. Because of the proximity to the baby, Flores was charged with endangering a child.
Bond for Flores was set at $25,000.
