A woman was arrested Sunday in connection with a shooting that left a 2-year-old boy in critical condition after he was allegedly shot by a 3-year-old boy, both of whom were reportedly under the woman's care. According to The Gazette, 30-year-old Monca Abeyta is suspected of felony child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury after the incident in Colorado Springs.
The Denver Posts reports that on Saturday, a three-year-old was playing with a gun when the weapon suddenly fired and struck the 2-year-old nearby. Authorities share that the shooting appeared accidental and the handgun wasn't locked away.
A neighbor tells The Gazette that Abeyta has three children in the house. "She's a very loving parent," said the neighbor. "Those kids are well taken care of."
The two-year-old was taken to the hospital and was reported in critical but stable condition. Authorities did not share specific information about the toddler, including whether the children involved in the crime are related.
