A South Carolina mother stands accused of murder after she allegedly left her newborn infant to decompose in her apartment clothes hamper for more than a year, People reported.
Jamie Melissa Wilson, 41, was charged with homicide by child neglect on Friday, several days after the infant was first discovered by investigators trying to evict Wilson from her apartment.
Because of how badly the infant had decomposed, investigators have not determined the baby’s gender or how it died, but the child was reportedly a newborn at the time of death, according to the Laurens County Coroner. The body was found wrapped in a hoodie that was then placed in a trash bag inside a tote bag.
Wilson allegedly claimed to police that the baby stopped breathing after she gave birth, and so she hid the child’s body instead of taking it to the hospital.
“The landlord was coming down and she was just crying,” said one neighbor, Bianca Jackson, to a local news station. “You could actually smell it coming down once they lifted the tops open.”
According to Fox Carolina, Wilson has two other children, a 21-year-old adult and a 5-year-old who lived with her. The 5-year-old was taken in by the South Carolina Department of Social Services.
