It is a sad fact of existence that some people just have bad luck. Mari Gilbert, who had already lost her daughter Shannan - possibly to Long Island’s Gilgo Beach Killer, died from stab wounds inflicted by her mentally ill daughter Sarra. Family members say the 27-year-old single mother suffered from schizophrenia and had complained she had been hearing voices telling her to harm her mother in the weeks before the fatal encounter.
Mari‘s daughter Shannan Gilbert went missing in May 2010. She was a paid escort and had left a client’s house on Long Island when she called 911 in a panic saying someone was trying to kill her before disappearing into the night. Nineteen months later her decaying remains were found in the same Long Island marshlands where 17 other sex workers' bodies have been found. Police suspect the killings to be the work of a single individual, known colloquially as the Gilgo Beach Killer or The Craisgslist Ripper, however authorities have so far refused to classify Shannan as one of his victims.
Sarra Gilbert has a long troubled history of mental illness. Last February she was arrested after drowning a puppy in front of her 8-year-old son and then threatening to kill him. Following that incident Mari Gilbert took custody of her grandson. Mari Gilbert went to her daughter’s apartment in Ellensville, NY after Sarra had complained of hearing voices to another sister. She is currently being held at the Ulster County jail on charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon without bail.
