A Maryland mother pleaded guilty to letting her boyfriend beat her 9-year-old son to death after a piece of birthday cake went missing, the Associated Press reported.

Oriana Garcia watched as her brother handcuffed her son Jack to a chair and her boyfriend Robert Wilson began beating him, after the boyfriend accused Jack of eating part of the cake meant for his 2-year-old daughter, prosecutors said.

He died on July 5, 2015 in the hospital, several days after his beating on June 30.

Garcia then sent away an ambulance that arrived to help Jack as he was dying, the AP reported.

Garcia pleaded guilty to first-degree child abuse in the case, and is awaiting sentencing, as is her brother Jacob Barajas.  Both could face up to 20 years in prison.

Wilson was convicted for the death and is serving a 30-year sentence for second degree murder.
