A mother and her boyfriend have been sentenced to life in prison without parole in the 2014 killing of her daughter. According to PEOPLE, 27-year-old Sarah Lynn Krueger and 29-year-old Ryan Scott Warner of Napa, California were found guilty last month of first-degree murder with the special circumstance of torture in the death of 3-year-old Kayleigh Slusher.
According to authorities, the toddler died from multiple blunt force trauma. Her body was found partially frozen in her mother’s apartment after the body was put in the freezer. The autopsy showed 41 distinguishable injuries all over Slusher's body. The fatal injury was a rupture in her small intestine.
“She was in [the freezer] for at least a number of hours,” said Deputy District Attorney Kecia Lind. “Her body was still extremely cold to the touch when the officers found her. We don’t know for sure how long she was in the freezer.”
During the trial, Krueger's lawyer said that the couple used meth and that played a role in the incident, PEOPLE reports. The investigation started when a family friend called 911 to check on the child's welfare. Initially, the couple tried to flea but were spotted at a public transportation stop in El Cerrito, California.
In addition to the murder conviction, the couple was also found guilty of abuse.
