Mom Who Drove Her Kids Into The Ocean To Be Released From Mental Hospital

She cannot have physical contact with her children until a therapist deems it safe.

A mom who drove her SUV with her children inside into the ocean was granted conditional release from a mental hospital Thursday afternoon. CBS affiliate WKMG reported that Ebony Wilkerson, 36, will have to stay in transitional housing and take injectable medications. Doctors and staff from the transitional facility reassured the judge that as long as Wilkerson takes her medication and receives therapy, she is unlikely to harm herself or others.

In March 2014, a then-pregnant Wilkerson drove her SUV into the water off Daytona Beach, according to CBS News. Rescuers saved the three children inside: ages 10, 9, and 3. They were not injured and the incident was captured on camera.  Wilkerson was found not guilty by reason of insanity on three counts of felony child abuse and was ordered committed to a state hospital in December 2014.

Wilkerson cannot have physical contact with her children until a therapist deems it safe. Wilkerson's husband currently has custody of the four children, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
