A couple in Las Vegas is mourning the loss of their baby after she was attacked by their family pet. According to KHON2, six-month-old Kamiko was bitten by a pit bull and died.
According to the family, the baby was playing in a baby walker near Mana, the family's pit bull. The mother went to the bathroom and when she returned, she saw Mana biting the baby. The family took Kamiko to the hospital where she later died. The family has had Mana for nine years and has never bitten anyone. “I have no words to explain my pain," the mother shared in a statement.
A veterinarian tells the news outlet that dog attacks against a baby are not common. “Like in humans, we all have different behaviors. Some are violent, some are passive. Dogs, the same thing too,” Dr. Richard Fujie said. “In this situation, I have no idea what happened. It could be a sharp noise, loud noise that scared the dog." He advises that parents supervise their children when the dog is around. "Supervision is always important. Staying with your child when dog is around, keeping child and dog separate until they’re older is important.”
The family has started a GoFundMe in memory of the baby.
