Orson William Black Jr. (also known as Larry William Black), a polygamist cult leader wanted on charges related to pedophilia, has been captured in Mexico after allegedly killing three Americans.
Around 100 Mexican officers stormed the compound. Many in the group are now being held on charges related to illegal immigration, wildlife smuggling, and animal cruelty.
Police discovered various exotic animal parts in the facility, including pieces of zebras, buffaloes, red foxes, black squirrels, a lion and a bear rug, and elephant feet.
Black's victims reportedly include three American citizens, teenagers Michael Black and Robert W. Black, and 23-year-old Jesse Barlow. What their connection is to Black has not yet been established. No one had claimed the bodies, although the trio reportedly lived on Black's compound and had been identified as members of his community. They did not appear to have birth certificates.
“During the investigation, it was notable that the victims did not have birth certificates and that the members of the religious community who appeared to identify the dead did not claim the bodies, and so the US consulate was contacted to provide information on this group,” the state prosecutor’s office confirmed.
Black has been wanted for over a decade in Arizona. In 2003, he was charged on five felony counts of sexual misconduct with two underage girls who would go on to become his wives. It is possible that one of the boys who was killed is the product of that arrangement.
Black's cult is known as “La Comuna,” and may be an offshoot of Warren Jeffs’ polygamist Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which Black was a member of. Jeffs is currently serving life in prison for sexually assaulting two underage girls, who he later wedded.
