Possessive Dad Shoots Daughter's Boyfriend Before Running Them Both Over

The father then committed suicide, police said.

A Texas dad fatally shot his daughter’s boyfriend on Friday before running him and his daughter over and later turning the gun on himself, NBC Dallas-Fort Worth reported.

Rafael Brena Arteaga, 43, apparently followed his daughter and her boyfriend, Omar Soto, 22, to a movie theater in an Arlington shopping center at 10 p.m. on Friday. The couple was with another friend at the time, a young woman.

Arteaga waited for the three friends to get in a car and begin driving—then he cut them off, police said. At this, Soto walked up to Arteaga to introduce himself, and Arteaga asked for Soto’s name, according to a witness account.

When Soto responded, Arteaga took out his gun and shot him multiple times, police said. Arteaga’s daughter ran to Soto’s side.

Her father then got back in his car and drove the couple over, before driving away. Police later found his car on the west side of Arlington, and when Arteaga did not get out of the vehicle, police discovered that he was dead inside the car, from an apparent self-inflicted gun wound.

Arteaga was an “over-protective” and “possessive” father, police said, who did not have a criminal record. He was a licensed gun owner, according to police.

Soto was a recent graduate from the University of Texas at Arlington, with dreams of going to grad school and becoming an architect, his friends told NBC.

Arteaga’s daughter is still alive and recovering from serious, but not life-threatening, injuries in a hospital, The Star-Telegram reported.

Police are still investigating what led to the attack.
