The body of a pregnant teen was found in a suitcase on the side of a road in the Dominican Republic on Friday.
According to People Chica, the body of 16-year-old Emely Peguero was discovered. In addition, fetal remains were found inside the teen—who was confirmed to be five months pregnant.
The Attorney General of the Dominican Republic stated that that her uterus was punctured, indicating an abortion. Peguero also suffered a blunt blow to the head.
Her boyfriend, Marlon Martinez and his mother Marlyn Martinez have been detained in connection with her death. Marlon, a United States citizen, allegedly admitted that he dumped her body in a landfill after she died during an illegal abortion.
The death sparked outrage in the country.
The Martinez family’s lawyer César José Hernández told People Chica, “Both myself and my family have been threatened with physical assault and damage to our goods and property. I have been slandered by the media and social networks. But I understand that ignorance is free and bold.”
Before Emely Peguero’s body was found, her mother, Adalgiza Polanco, made a plea to her community for help finding her daughter. She took to social media with campaigns like “Todos Somos Emely,” or "We Are All Emely."
On national television, the distraught mother said, “I know that my daughter is not alive, but the least they can do is give me back the body to cry with.”
