A gunman shot people at a birthday party at his San Diego apartment complex on Sunday.

According to numerous reports, shooter Peter Selis, 49, had a beer in one hand and a gun in the other during the incident. CNN reported that Selis as seated sat in a poolside lounge chair, he called his ex-girlfriend to tell her he shot two people. According to police, Selis kept her on the phone as he continued shooting.

Selis broke up with his girlfriend just days before the shooting, according to police. Family members described him as depressed, according to CNN, but stated nothing in his behavior suggested he would do something like this.

"It is very clear that he was despondent over the breakup," the police chief said. "It is apparent that he wanted his girlfriend to listen in as he carried out his rampage."

Selis killed one woman and injured six before police fatally shot him. One other person was hurt while fleeing the apartment complex.

The shooter was white and many of the victims were people of color, according to reports. However, police claim there was "zero information" to suggest the rampage was racially motivated.

"The victims were targeted for no reason other than their mere presence," police said. "What started as a celebration of a friend's birthday turned into a tragedy of epic proportions for all those in attendance."

Police are looking into the shooter’s background. He had no criminal background and one handgun registered in his name, according to the report.
