For episode 12 of Martinis & Murder, John Thrasher interviews Sharon Martin, co-executive producer and narrator of true crime television staple Snapped on Oxygen. Sharon has produced more than 350 episodes of Snapped, and notes there’s still plenty more women out there who have killed for new seasons.
Asked whether a particular case haunts her, Sharon doesn't hesitate to name Michelle Knotek, who she called sheer evil. “She was a woman who tortured people, and not just one person—and she was starving her daughters,” explained Sharon. “That show is one that particularly sticks with me because it’s not something that someone did in a moment of passion or retribution.” Knotek was convicted in 2004 of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the torture and deaths of boarders who lived in her home.
As for why women kill, Sharon explains that she’s noticed a thread. “It’s often an issue of desperation. A lot of these are women who’ve made bad choices or have been in bad situations and have found themselves in desperate straights and feel there’s no other way,” says Sharon. “Some of the women are on their second or third marriage. They are trying to provide for their children. They are single mothers.”
Saying the women feel backed into a corner, Sharon says: “They are desperate to keep something hidden or to keep their husbands from finding out something or they’re desperate to hold on to something and for whatever reason that decision making process leads them to the idea of, ‘well, instead of divorce, let’s kill him.’”
