A teenage girl was shot and killed on Monday while watching the filming of a rap video as she was on Spring break in Washington, DC, NBC Washington reported.
Ayana McAllister, of Maryland, was shot while the video was being filmed in a apartment complex parking lot. Another woman, McAllister’s friend, was also shot but survived her minor injuries.
A friend of hers was filming the video.
“Gunshots rang out. Ayana was struck,” said Metropolitan Police Chief Peter Newsham to the News and Observer. “She was probably over there doing something young people do all the time. There was a music video being filmed, and we lost the life of a young woman because somebody thought it was OK to discharge a firearm in our community.”
It’s the second tragedy to strike the McAllister family in recent months; McAllister’s cousin Carrington Carter was shot and killed in DC this past December.
“Young people ought to be able to come into our community and enjoy themselves without being nervous that a gun is going to be pulled out and somebody is going to end up dead,” Newsham said.
