A Texas teacher who had sex with two 17-year-old students pleaded guilty Friday to two felony counts of improper relationship between educator and student. As part of her plea deal she will avoid jail time and will not have to register as a sex offender. Haeli Wey, 28, met her two teenage lovers at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, where she taught math.
According to CBS News, Wey began the first relationship when she accompanied the boy’s family on a trip to Africa. The victim told police that he and Wey had sex 10 times before he broke off the relationship when he heard that she was also seeing a fellow 17-year-old student at the school. Wey began the second relationship after going on a hike with the boy. After rumors circulated in the school about the relationship, police questioned the boy, at which time the first victim contacted police.
Wey was arrested in October, 2015 and resigned from her job at Westlake High. According to NBC affiliate KXAN, Wey’s attorney says his client will be sentenced to 10 years deferred adjudication probation as part of her plea deal. The age of consent in Texas is 17, which is the main reason why she will not have to register as a sex offender.
