A 15-year-old boy allegedly killed a 16-year-old Maryland girl and injured her mother in a shooting at their house shortly after the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Suzanne Zaremba, 52, went to her daughter Charlotte’s bedroom around 2 a.m. after hearing a commotion coming from inside, Howard County police claim. When Zaremba opened the door, the male suspect shot at her and her daughter, and then shot himself in the head.
Charlotte was transferred to a nearby hospital, where she died. Her mother was treated by a Shock Trauma center for non-life threatening injuries. Another family member was home at the time of the shootings but not hurt.
The suspect, who wasn’t identified by police because of his age, is currently alive in dire critical condition. Police say it’s unclear what connection he has to the family or how he got in the house.
Students at Howard High School, where Charlotte was a sophomore, wore all black on Monday after they learned the news.
"The school system will have a team of counselors here to support students and staff," Howard County Public Schools spokesman John White told a local outlet.
