Police arrested a 17-year-old Texan boy who allegedly beat his mother with a hammer and stabbed her with a screwdriver before fleeing the scene, investigators said.

William Bryars drove off in his mother’s car after the assault on Tuesday and was apprehended and arrested by police on charges of aggravated assault this morning.

His mother, Kathy Ann Bryars, is “being released from the hospital this morning,” said Lt. Dennis Gutierrez, a spokesman for the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, in an interview with Oxygen. He added that he could not yet disclose the extent of her injuries.

Police are still investigating what prompted the assault, Gutierrez said.

Officers caught Bryars after a short pursuit, during which he ended up wrecking his mother’s car. He was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.

Bryars was captured in Illinois and is awaiting extradition to Texas.
