The internet has fallen in love with Harvey and Irma. No, not the devastating hurricanes but an adorable couple named Harvey and Irma Schluter, who have been married 75 years.
“I don’t know how they’ve done that, to have a Harvey and Irma,” Irma, 92, told the New York Times Wednesday. Her husband, Harvey, is 104. “I don’t know how that worked out.”
Since 1979, the World Meteorological Organization alternated men’s and women’s names for tropical storms over the Atlantic. The names of hurricanes that are particularly deadly or costly are retired, which will likely be the case for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. But, the cuter, human versions of the storms have no plans to withdraw from each other.
The two married in 1942 and spent a lifetime taking in and caring for foster children, many of which were physically or mentally disabled. The Spokesman-Review reported that they took in 120 children over the decades. Harvey said that being a foster father was his most rewarding life achievement. When asked why the couple took in so many children, Irma said, “I don’t know, we just did. They were interesting little people.”
Twitter is absolutely smitten with the couple.
The couple said it’s odd to see their names linked to destruction.
“Really sad,” Irma said.
