A former California police officer is now facing bank robbery charges after authorities say she drew a beard on her face and disguised herself as a man to rob a bank, NBC Los Angeles reported.
Cops allege that Jennifer Rae McClary, 36, drew the fake beard, put on sunglasses, and tossed on a hat that said "Cali" on it in order to rob a Bay Area bank.
She robbed the bank by handing a note to the teller, and then fled on foot, according to KTLA.
The Tuesday encounter was caught on security camera, and cops arrested McClary later that day.
In addition to the bank robbery charges, McClary is also accused of possessing a controlled substance.
She worked for the Plancentia Police Department for two years before she was terminated in 2010 for failing to complete all probationary period requirements, NBC reported, a failure that is not unusual according to the police department. She worked for the Los Angeles Police Department for two years before that.
"I saw the picture, and I was just as surprised as anybody else," said Placentia Sgt. Bryce Angel. "It's kind of sad that anyone would fall to that level in life... She obviously had some issues she was dealing with."
McClary grew up in northern Orange County, and her childhood neighbors were shocked.
“I find that hard to believe,” one neighbor said to CBS Los Angeles. “We raise our kids well, and it doesn’t seem like something she would do.”
