A 15-year-old student shot his teacher and three students at a private school in Monterrey, Mexico yesterday, before killing himself, the Associated Press reported.
Three of his victims, including the teacher, are battling life-threatening head injuries, and one - shot in the arm - is recovering.
A video posted to social media, possibly from the school’s surveillance camera, shows the teacher passing out classroom materials. Suddenly a boy, sitting at his desk, shoots the student in front of him. He then shoots the teacher and his classmates before killing himself.
The teacher is 24 years old and the students range from 14 to 15 years old.
The government is still investigating the motive behind the shooting. State security spokesman Aldo Fasci told the Associated Press that the person who shared the photos and videos of the shooting on social media will be punished.
School shootings are extremely rare in Mexico, which has strict gun control laws. Before Wednesday, only one person had been killed in a school shooting since 2013, according to Foreign Policy, so this shooting has shocked the nation.
“The images of the massacre show a premeditated act which we had become accustomed to see in the United States, not here,” one Mexican daily paper editorialized.
