A California Uber driver helped rescue a 16-year-old girl from sex trafficking after he heard two older women arranging for her to have sex for a “donation,” People magazine reported.
Keith Avila, a dad who works as a photographer when he is not driving people for Uber, noticed that the girl that the two older women brought in the car with them looked like a child—he thought she might have been only 12 years old. At that point, one of the ladies began yelling at the girl.
“The lady in the back started getting really upset,” he told People. “She was yelling at the girl, ‘You need to get your priorities straight. We need to make this money.’
“The woman in the back started coaching the girl,” he said. “She said, ‘before you go in, check for weapons. When you hug them and touch them, pat them down.’”
“The woman told the girl to get the donation first,” Avila said. “She said, ‘Ask if they have your donation before you go into the room.’”
At this point, Avila had a hunch that the two women were pimping the younger girl out. When Avila heard a room number, he waited until all the women had left the car, and then called the cops.
When police arrived, they arrested Destiny Pettway (pictured at left) and Maria Westley (right), for pimping and threatening a minor.
The alleged client, 20-year-old Disney Vang, was also charged with soliciting a prostitute and sexual contact with a minor.
Police said that the 16-year-old girl had been reported previously as a missing person.
