Surveillance video captured a shocking incident in Campo Limpo Paulista, Brazil on Saturday. Two men wearing hoodies stormed a pharmacy, announcing that they were about to rob the establishment.
But, shopping inside was off-duty Sao Paulo police sergeant, Rafael Souza, who was carrying his infant child. One of the armed men pointed a gun at Souza. Souza then pulled his own gun, Brazilian paper Estadao reports. He then got into a 25-second running gun battle with the men.
In the now-viral video Souza shoots at the men while keeping an eye on his wife, who took shelter behind one of the store’s aisles, the Washington Post reports. Her hands are over her ears. His wife reaches out for their child and Souza stops shooting at the men for a brief moment in time to hand the infant to his wife. Then, he resumes gunfire.
In the end, both armed robbers, Jefferson Alves, 24 and Italo Creato, 22, were killed in the gun battle, the Independent reports. They were pronounced dead when paramedics arrived on the scene, according to the Washington Post. Reports did not indicate if anyone else was hurt. The baby appeared to be uninjured.
Souza told investigators he shot first because he figured if he announced he was a police officer, they would have just started shooting.
The incident is currently under investigation.
According to RT, a similar incident took place in Brazil in 2014. An off-duty police officer was attacked while holding his baby daughter.
“The cop was forced to drop the baby, but was able to shoot and later apprehend the criminal. His daughter sustained only minor injuries.”
