Video Shows Cops Stop Mayor For Driving Lawnmower Down Highway With Open Beer: 'It Was Just A Misunderstanding'

“You ain’t supposed to have that, you know that. Am I right or am I wrong?”

Dashcam video has been released of the mayor of Aynor, South Carolina being pulled over while riding a lawnmower and allegedly carrying an open container of Miller Light.

According to WSOC-TV, police said they pulled over John Gardner after they spotted his mower swerving all over the road. In the dashcam, police can be heard laughing.

“You have an open container of Miller Light. You were drinking going down the road,” one officer said in the video, after pulling Garner over.

“I know, I apologize for that,” the mayor replied. He is also the chief financial officer for Horry County Schools, according to Myrtle Beach Online.

“You ain’t supposed to have that, you know that. Am I right or am I wrong?” another officer tells the mayor in the video.

The two officers then made Gardner pour out the beer. Gardner now claims that the Miller Light wasn’t open at the time he was pulled over.

“It was unopened to the best of my knowledge,” Gardner said in an interview Friday. “I remember opening it to pour it out.”

He said had put gas in the lawnmower after cutting his mother-in-law’s grass. Then, he claimed he picked up the lone beer at a gas station. In that interview, he said he believes he was pulled over because the lawnmower had no lights.

“It was just a misunderstanding.”

He wasn’t cited or charged for the incident. Gardner is up for re-election this year. He told My Horry News he hopes the video doesn't stop people from voting from him.

"We have an excellent council," Gardner said. "We put fencing around the cemetery, we have made great improvements at the park, and we're about to complete a storm water drainage project…I hope people will see what we have done and gauge me on that."
