On Saturday, around 2,000 Donald Trump supporters went marching on Bolsa Chica State Beach in California. The demonstration was peaceful until the marchers encountered counter protesters, and a fight broke out. The event descended into mayhem that was captured from above in a video that shows people in physical altercations and running in confusion:
The Associated Press reports that there were only about 30 counter protesters, three of whom were arrested on “suspicion of illegal use of pepper spray.” A fourth person was arrested on “suspicion of assault and battery.”
One anti-Trump protester who was accused of spraying organizers with chemicals was kicked to the ground by Trump supporters and hit over the head with a “Make America Great Again” sign, according to The Washington Post. A man named Travis Guenther told reporters, “I hit him five times with the flag over his head,” in supposed retaliation for his wife being hit with the eye irritant.
The counter protesters had planned to create a wall blocking the progress of the march, and allege that they didn’t use pepper spray until they were surrounded by Trump supporters who were yelling, “You can’t run, you can’t hide.”
Some reports suggest that following arrests there were moments of calm discussion between the two opposing groups, which is welcome, if somewhat unbelievable, news.
